History

Peoria is a major suburb of Phoenix in the state of Arizona. Nestled into the northern mountains, it sits on the gently sloping desert floor in the Salt River Valley. The city gets its name from the first four families that settled there in the late 1800s, who came from Peoria, IL. The completion of the Arizona Canal in 1885 allowed the community to establish itself.

In the 90s, Peoria was the fifth fastest-growing city in the nation, and the first city in Arizona that began making growth projections based on water availability rather than land mass. Today, Peoria is home to the Challenger Space Center of Arizona and a major league baseball training facility, both popular tourist destinations. A center for the performing arts and numerous sports facilities are in the city. The City of Peoria Recreations Department offers comprehensive programming for its active residents. In 2008, Peoria was named in the Top 100 Places to Live by Money Magazine.
