History

Pomona is the seventh largest city in Los Angeles County, with a population of more than 149,000, and is home to the NHRA Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. The city also hosts the Pomona Swap Meet and Classic Car Show. The city is named for Pomona, the ancient Roman goddess of fruit, which was chosen as the winning entry in a contest to name the city in 1875. The city was first settled when it belonged to Mexico. In the 1880s it became a major citrus-growing region.
