Providence was first settled in 1636 by religious exile Roger Williams, who named the city after 'God's merciful providence.' Once nicknamed the 'Beehive of Industry' after it found itself in the center of the jewelry and silverware industries, Providence is now becoming better known as the 'Creative Capital,' attracting attention to its burgeoning arts and educational communities. Providence has many diverse cultures that call it home, including many Italian, Portuguese, Central Americans, Asians, and Irish populations. The city also boasts more restaurants per capita than any other city in the United States. In addition to all of the great places to eat, Providence also hosts WaterFire, an environmental art display that is comprised of over 100 bonfires set just above the surfaces of the three rivers that pass through the city. Providence is also home to the Tony Award winning theater group the Trinity Repertory Company, as well as many other performing arts groups.
The K-12 educational needs of Providence are met by the Providence Public Schools. They operate 24 elementary schools, six middle schools, and eight high schools. There are a number of opportunities for tutoring positions for general educators. There are also a number of charter and private schools that operate in the area, providing additional teaching job opportunities. If you are seeking tutoring jobs in the post-secondary fields, Providence has a very prestigious college and university presence. Home to Brown, an Ivy League school, as well as the oldest public college in the state, Rhode Island College, there are five main university campuses in Providence. Tutoring jobs are plentiful in this city.
When looking to schedule teaching jobs, there are a number of public library branches to meet your needs. Operated by two individual groups, the Providence Community Library group has nine locations with a variety of hours to fit your needs, and the Providence Public Library group operates one major branch in downtown Providence. Since 75% of the city's high school and college population are employed at the numerous restaurants in the area, consider taking you tutoring jobs to one of them. Many offer free WiFi.
