History

With Charles William Fuller's arrival in the Truckee Meadows in 1859, Reno was born under the name Fuller's Crossing. However, by 1861, the city was sold and renamed Lake's Crossing after Myron C. Lake (the buyer). This area became an important post between California, Virginia City's silver mines, and Comstock Lode.

In 1868, after the Central Pacific Railroad crossed through the lands, an agreement was made between Myron Lake and the railroad, this area was split in half. The new settlement was named Reno after a Union army officer. By 1871, the Washoe County seat was relocated here and two major railroads moved through the land. Finally, in 1885, the University of Nevada came to Reno. With the 1930's, Reno became a hub of casino gambling because the pastime was legalized. Besides gambling being important to Reno's growth, so has transportation, thus the city continues to flourish, thus opportunities for teaching jobs and tutoring jobs.
