History

Riverside was founded in 1870 as a colony of education and culture. This area was also a hub for cultivating navel oranges and other citrus fruits. By 1882, there were nearly 250,000 trees in Riverside. Due to refrigerated railroad cars and innovative irrigation systems, Riverside was the richest city per person by 1895.

Recreation and tourist sites have helped the city. Riverside boasts over 100 Landmarks, 20 National Register Sites, and two National Landmarks. The City Council also created Riverside's Historic Preservation Program so that the area can keep its historic background and educate the population and visitors on the past. Recreation and tourism continues to help this city grow in population and economy. As of 2010, there were 303,871 citizens.
