In 1803 Col. Nathaniel Rochester and two others bought about 100 acres along the Genesee River from the state of New York. By 1811, the three had a plan and the town had 15 residents. In 1817, local landowners joined their land, and the village of Rochesterville was born. Today, Rochester is home to over 210,000 residents and is the third largest city in the state of New York. After being ranked as the sixth most desirable place to live, Forbes ranked it as the third best place in the United States to raise a family. Rochester is now a world-renowned international center for higher education, as well as a hub of medical and technological development.
