History

Saint Paul was founded in 1787 and it was part of the Northwest Territory. By 1819, the first fort Ð Fort Snelling Ð was built. It was here that much of America's fur trading happened. In only 40 years, the city grew from a tiny trade town to a permanent town with cabins, a newspaper, a chapel, and a school. By 1860, there were 10,000 people living in the city, and by 1861, the first steam engine, rail cars, and tracks came through Saint Paul. The railroad played a critical role in shaping Saint Paul economically and in population. In fact, for over a hundred years, this city's main source of income was through the railroads. However, in present time, importing and exporting goods has influenced Saint Paul's growth. As of the 2010 census, there were 285,068 citizens within the city.
