History

When John Williams bought 2,500 acres, Saint Petersburg, Florida was born in 1875. Within 13 years, the railroad came to the city with empty fright cars and a shoe salesperson. A big year was 1914. The St. Louis Browns were moved to St. Petersburg, which spurred the citizen's love of baseball. Also, Tony Jannus flew his plane across Tampa Bay in 23 minutes Ð this event is considered commercial aviation's birth.

The city stayed small until the 1920's when tourists swarmed the area. During this time, the Gandy Bridge opened Ð it cut travel time to Tampa in half! An architectural boom joined the population boom Ð many buildings were constructed at this time. With the Great Depression caused the real estate market to crash, but in the 1930's, Saint Petersburg recovered.

The 1940's and 1950's have been marked by growth. The U.S. Coast Guard Station was built and the city was selected as an Army Air Corps technical services training center. Even today, the population continues to grow and buildings are built. As of the 2010 census, there were 244,769 citizens.
