History

San Bernardino was founded in the early years of the 19th century as a jumping point for missionaries looking to convert the Native Americans in the region. In fact, the city derives its name from Saint Bernardino of Siena. In 1834, the mission period came to a close by order of the governor, and San Bernardino became an important stop along the Spanish Trail. In 1854, the city was officially incorporated. The city had a large Mormon population who set up the first schools, stores, and government. In 1857, many of the Mormons returned to Utah, and in 1860 gold was discovered in the mountains. The railroads reached San Bernardino as the 19th century came to a close. Today, San Bernardino is home to over 209,000 diverse residents. San Bernardino has a thriving academic and medical community, many annual cultural events, and museums and theaters for year-round activity.
