History

Shreveport is the third largest city in Louisiana. Seated by the Red River, Shreveport was founded by the Shreve Town Company to regulate the route from the river and the Texas Trail. It has grown into the cultural and commercial center of the Ark-La-Tex area, comprised of the Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas meeting boundaries. Shreveport is the home of many museums, art galleries and live theater houses. These include the Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet, Shreveport Opera, and the Southern University Museum of Art. Shreveport is also world-renowned for its Jazz history, with sons such as Huddie 'Lead Belly' Ledbetter and other musical greats such as Elvis Presley gracing her stages. The film industry has also developed a liking to Shreveport, with over 30 films and numerous television shows being filmed here, earning the city the nickname 'Hollywood South.'

Shreveport is home to over 213,000 people. Many of them work for the state, the US Air Force, or in the medical fields. Caddo Public School District operates the school system. There are 54 elementary schools, 16 middle schools, and 12 high schools in the district in addition to upwards of 75 private schools.
