In 1849, Charles M. Weber received the 48,000 acres that comprise Stockton. He attempted to create a gold mine, but realized that he'd draw more people by providing for the miners. Weber was right in his assumption. Growing, processing and transporting agricultural goods further advanced the economics of the city. By 1854, Stockton was the fourth largest city in California. At the end of the 19th century, flourmills, carriage factories, iron foundries, and shipyards made this city a transportation and commercial hub.
The economic advancement due to shipbuilding continued throughout WWII. Actually, anything related to boats increased the wealth. In 1933, California opened its first inland seaport. It drew people from all around the world. During this time, movies, such as 'Cool Hand Luke' and 'All the King's Men' were filmed here, thus the movie business racked up revenue. This economic growth is still happening. As of the 2010 census, there were 291,707 citizens in Stockton.
