Syracuse, or Emerald City, is an economic and educational hub in a region with over a million people. Syracuse has many convention centers and hosts the annual Great New York State Fair. The city gets its name from Siracusa, on the Italian island of Sicily. The site of an ancient salty lake, the dark, gloomy swamp belonged to the Onondagas who, at the climax of the French and Indian war, transferred it to local salt producers. The coming of the Erie Canal through the village brought an increase in salt sales, which became the city's primary industry. Until 1900, the bulk of the salt used in the U.S. came from Syracuse, dubbed 'Salt City.' The railroad brought other industry. World War II brought in specialty steel, fasteners, and custom machining. After the war, General Motors and Chrysler had major operations there, but these industries declined in the 1970s. Syracuse's top employers are now in education and service sectors. In 2010, Syracuse was rated fourth by Forbes in the top ten places to raise a family.
One of Syracuse's major research universities, Syracuse University, has an enrollment of 20,000 students, providing ample opportunity to get teaching jobs in the area. Nearby are two doctoral-degree State University of New York (SUNY) colleges: the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and SUNY Upstate Medical University. Both have ties to Syracuse University, which further enhance the possibility of teaching jobs. Upstate Medical University is one of some 125 academic medical centers in the country and the region's largest employer. Syracuse also has a host of other colleges that provide teaching jobs.
Fueled by expansions of Syracuse University and Upstate Medical University, University Hill is Syracuse's fastest growing neighborhood, and an economic and educational hub for tutoring jobs. Other educational institutions based in Syracuse that afford tutoring jobs include Le Moyne College Jesuit college, SUNY's Empire State College, Bryant & Stratton College, and ITT Technical Institute. Other colleges in the area also offer opportunity for tutoring jobs, such as Cornell University, Ithaca College, Hamilton College, Oswego State University, SUNY Cortland, Morrisville State College, and Colgate University, as well as Onondaga Community College.
