History

The first Europeans to visit Tampa were the Spanish in the 16th century. After being traded between Great Britain and Spain, the U.S. owned the land in 1821. There was no permanent settlement until 1824. The U.S. Army set up Tampa as a fort city. This fort became a settler's sanctuary during the Second Seminole War. During the Civil War, Florida seceded from the Union, but rejoined after the war. Things were hard Ð yellow fever was widespread, thus the population and economy decreased. However, within a few years, life improved and the economy stabilized, especially because of cigar manufacturing. By the 2010 census, there were 335,709 people living in Tampa.
