French trading posts dotted the Toledo landscape as far back as 1680. But it took nearly 100 years for Americans to settle here. However, during the War of 1812, many settlers left the area. Within in 5 years though, people immigrated back to Toledo.
By the 1820s and 1830s, canals were built, which allowed for produce to be transported from places like the Appalachian Mountains quicker than ever. Because there was an easier way to transfer merchandise, people moved to this area (though they didn't come quickly). During this time, there was also the 'Toledo War,' a land battle that lasted a year, and which Ohio won.
What made people come to this area was the invention of larger canal boats that couldn't maneuver through the shallow Manhattan waters. These ships could sail through the deeper Toledo waters. By 1860, there were 13,768 residents. This growth continued until the Great Depression, when the industries failed. After recovering in the 1930s, a second economic downturn happened in the 1980s. Things have improved in the 20th century. As of 2010, there were 287,208 residents.
