History

Vancouver is located along the Columbia River in Washington state, and is Washington's fourth largest city. The city was named, along with its Canadian counterpart, for the sea captain and explorer George Vancouver. Vancouver is part of the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area and shares Portland's media market. Downtown Vancouver has a vibrant arts community. The historical Kiggens Theatre, designed by architect Day Walter Hilborn, was renovated and reopened in 2011. The area's transit system operates 135 buses. The Fort Vancouver Regional Library District administrates 13 branches. The park and recreation department manages nearly 7,000 acres of parkland, over 44 miles of trails, and a number of community facilities. For 14 years, Vancouver has put on a summer wine and jazz festival in Esther Short Park.
