History

The first inhabitants of Virginia Beach were the Chesepian Native Americans. Europeans settled in this area in 1621. Natural resources were important to the slow growth of the city as was Adam Thoroughgood.

He originally called the 5,350 acres he was granted New Norfolk after his homeland. Eventually, he was elected to not only the Governor's Council, but also the House of Burgesse's and a Justice of the Court, giving him a lot of power to shape the city as he saw fit. However, the true growth of the city was in the 19th century. During the 1800's, the railroad came through the area. This brought more people. In 1888, the city was illuminated with electricity and the Princess Anne Hotel was opened. Finally, in 1906, this city was officially recognized and incorporated into Virginia as a town. By 1922, Virginia Beach Boulevard opened and motorists could drive to Virginia Beach. The city continues to grow because of the beachfront. According to the 2010 census, there were 437,994 people living here.
