History

Wichita was officially incorporated into Kansas in 1870, but Francisco V‡squez de Coronado visited the area in the mid-1500s. The area quickly grew and became a hub of trade with the indigenous people. Also, Wichita drew people because of its position on the Chisholm Trail, which linked cattle drives to the eastern railroads. By the 20th century, the city was prospering, especially when the airplane industry became to build factories. Even in the 21st century, Boeing and Airbus have kept their business within the city. As of the 2010 census, there is 382,368 citizens living within Wichita.
