History

Yonkers is a historical city in New York with roots from the Netherlands. Originally known as 'Jonkheer' or 'Jonker,' meaning 'esquire,' the area was part of a 24,000-acre land grant from the director of New Netherland to Adriaen van der Donck. Currently, 195,976 people call Yonkers home. The city is rich with colonial era architecture, and many of the colonial buildings are museums or still actively used. Yonkers has been home to innovative minds such as Elisha Otis, the namesake of elevators, who invented the elevator brakes, perhaps the most important part of the entire machine. It was also the birthplace of Bakelite, the first completely synthetic plastic. Today, Yonkers is still growing and plans to add luxury housing and waterfront development, including retail and commercial additions.
